Celebrating the dream of a chorus girl’s rise to stardom, this big, bold, multiple-Tony-award-winning musical hits all the right notes and serves up spectacular dance routines while following newcomer Peggy Sawyer from audition mishaps to the Broadway spotlight. Famed dictatorial director Julian Marsh seeks to mount the musical extravaganza “Pretty Lady” during the Great Depression, agreeing to cast aging prima donna Dorothy Brock in the leading role to obtain financial backing from her wealthy beau Abner Dillon. Through intervention by young tenor Billy Lawlor, Peggy is cast in the chorus, but on opening night trips and crashes into Dorothy, leaving the leading lady with a broken ankle which threatens to close the show. Julian fires Peggy, but relents when the chorus kids assure him that Peggy’s song and dance ability can fill the vacant lead role with aplomb. Peggy, however, has had her fill of show business, and needs coaxing from Julian with the lyrics of the familiar Lullaby of Broadway, then becomes an overnight sensation in a fabulous hit show. You’ll thrill to the standards Shadow Waltz, Go Into Your Dance, Dames, We’re in the Money, I Only Have Eyes for You, and, of course, the title song showcasing New York’s most famous street.
